No. The size of the hard drive makes it big enough to record whatever you are wanting to record for hours and hours. The video tapes we used to use were determinate in length, so it was handy to use the long-play mode, etc., to make the most of your tape limitations of 1-2 hours. The Roamio has 1 Tb of memory, so you can record about 150 hours of high definition before getting close to full. Since I watch my recordings later in the same week, I will never approach the capacity of the machine.
