It has to be activated, using the service number. That's on the back of the device, and on the settings screen. Activation is done on https://www.tivo.com/tivo-mma/mma-activate/activateservice.do. This also gives you the channel guides for free. You may need to create a sign in ID and password for the site first,

I can't remember the steps but I remember their were A LOT of service updates to download and it took awhile for the actual software to finish updating. From the TV support site here are the registration steps although the online setup guided me through it and I never needed any other directions. If you aren't yet a TiVo subscriber, follow the instructions below to register your new Roamio OTA: At tivo.com, click "My Account" Click "Email address not on file" Enter TSN and MAK Enter the phone number 555-555-5555 Enter the ZIP code
