• Washers intend for smaller gauge wire. If wire slips out, you need to use the washers. Also might need to fold the wire over on itself to create enough bulk stranded wire as you impale the wire onto internal Spike, before screwing nut down tight tomfurther impale and hold You wire in place.

• No. Try buying the other style of banana plugs which use a set screw to hold the wire to the plug, Then there's no need for those plastic compression washers. Alternatively, fashion your own, re-purposing plastic intended for another application.
