• This unit is not made for mounting on a shelf. The bottom of the unit is not flat. The light and the exhaust fan intake are both on the bottom.

• We appreciate the question, EquusGluteus! This model is designed to be installed mounted on a wall above a range or cooktop. Due to this, it does need the underside open for proper ventilation. Samsung does have other models available that are designed for use on a counter-top. ^Jecca
