• The big difference is that HDMI can pass higher resolution audio, including formats found in Blu-ray: Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, these formats cannot be transmitted through the optical line, in terms of simplicity, HDMI also pass video signals. So if you want only one cable between the two devices, HDMI is the choice.
