Does this washer require using HE detergent? null

All Front loaders require HE detergent. What I personally suggest is using Tide Powder and putting it directly into the wash vs. the dispenser as it dissolves much better when in the machine itself. I feel that the liquid leaves a residue inside the machine which constantly requires it to be cleaned and can make it smell. I use the powder exclusively and have no issues with the washer smelling.

This washer needs HE detergent.
