Do not bother with HDTV if you only have basic cable. Seriously - you'll probably be throwing money down the toilet and very unhappy with your purchase. I don't think cable gives you option to choose HD signal with basic (that's how they hook you in to buy a more expensive package). If you want an HDTV, splurge and get more than basic cable. Otherwise..stick with what you have and save your money.
