Yes only when you pause the cycle. The washer will lock while In use due to safety.

Yes you can. Once you start the wash cycle all you do to unlock it is press the pause button. The wash cycle pauses and the lock is disengages, once you are done adding wash items shut the door and press the pause button and the lock engages and starts the wash where it left off.
