“If one of the washers has a problem and won’t work does that mean the other washer won’t work either? For example if the bottom washer breaks down can I still wash clothes in the upper little washer or will it not work either?”

Both machines are independent. They only share the water lines, drain lines, and one power cord.

Very rarely but should you ever any issues with error codes then it will just be on the control panel that is being used not both. You would be able to use the other washer but error code should be simple fixes.
