“When room darkens the picture goes too dark. any way to disable this feature. I tried brightening the picture from the original setting of 3 to 5.”

The TV defaults to its ECO mode which adjusts the picture based on room light levels. Turn it off in by going into the Menu > System > Eco Solution.

It sounds like this TV is set to Dynamic. This can cause the screen to get darker based on the ambient lighting. Try going to MENU>Picture>Picture Mode and test out those settings.
