“Is the sound quality for regular TV channels and blue ray movies good enough to skip buying a sound bar? We have a sound bar now and the lowest bass setting is still too much base.”

Go to a Best Buy store and ask to listen to one. For me, I never use a soundbar or other speakers as the TV speakers are adequate including stereo separation. They are not perfect but they are acceptable to me. More than that, I cannot say because everyone is different when it comes to sound and picture quality.
