No it doesn’t have to connect to Wi-Fi in order to work just got them last month and they are wonderful. The Wi-Fi option is so you can control it from your phone.

It’s just another smart feature to let you know your washer or dryer is done so you don’t have to keep guessing is it done yet? Is it done yet? It let you know when it is done so you can put it in the dryer and put in another wash. It’s a great feature to have.
