Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It is illegal to manufacture a region free DVD player. Technically, this isn't a "DVD player", just like my Windows PC is not a "DVD player" (even though it has DVD playback capabilities), but I don't know the exact wording of the law, so there might be some loophole for DVD drives built for PCs and such, obviously there is, but I don't know what the loophole looks like. I have never seen a region free blu ray player. You can buy modified DVD players from aftermarket sellers on "the world's biggest garage sale" and "Earth's shopping center" (code names; psst!) but the warranties are covered by companies that most people have never heard of, and most movies don't generate enough interest for people to go to that kind of mouse-hunting in order to see it/them x# of days prior to the U.S. release date. If it were a problem, Hollywood might convince congress to amend (expand) the copyright laws to forbid consumers modifying their merchandise and then selling it to other people. Region coding is probably not very costly. It's probably the simplest aspect of DVD production. It might be an excessive expense that doesn't pay for itself, but on the other hand, who can say? Even if I or anyone else knew how much it costs Hollywood to embed that protection, it's never been tested. It's not common for a movie that the world is waiting on pens and needles for to get released overseas before it gets a local release, but if it were, with DVD region coding having always existed (with perhaps the small exception of the very first crop of DVDs from a time period where nobody knew what a DVD is, let alone was buying them like they are bought now) it's almost impossible to get an idea of what Hollywood would be pocketing if they ditched region coding and just let things be...which is what they should do, IMO, but I don't run a "major" motion picture studio, so my virtuous attitude about it means nothing.
