Don't know the answer to activate now or later, bestbuy or cricket needs to answer that question, and cricket is the answer to the sim card question. Mine was at&t and it worked just fine by moving sim card

Phones at Best Buy and other phone outlets offer bundled services through wireless phone companies. If you choose a wireless carrier at the time of purchase, you won't pay full retail price for the phone. As to the phone's compatibility with Cricket, it's on the list of compatible carriers. You would need a new SIM card from Cricket, matched to your new phone, for it to work properly.
