Listen up Grandpa, have you heard of hearing aids? The earbuds have the same technology. It's called a microphone and it actually makes sounds around you easier to hear. That's what ambient sound is. You can even hear better with these than your own 2 ear holes.

By having the earbuds fit into the ear canal, those vibrations are closer to the ear drum allowing for better sound perception. The drivers are balanced to prevent sound distortion and create a clear, beautiful sound. Moreover, by fitting snug into the canal, the seal it creates a passive noise canceling effect, similar to wearing ear plugs. Combine that with a low frequency sound that the Buds Pro give off during active noise canceling, and music becomes even more clear. Also, I think kids have no trouble hearing their parents, but choose not listen :).
