I just did this. You can buy a sim card on the TracFone website in the BYOP section. They cost $1. I got free overnight shipping. Be sure of the right size card. My phone needed a nano sim but I was told to get micro. Also, you can sometimes find a sim kit at Walmart or Best Buy that offers all possible sim cards that work with TracFone for about $10. Activation is easy once you get the card.
