Good question. I've wondered this myself and can only assume it helps to cover the carrier configurations and programming expense to include carrier bloat. I went with the unlocked version for $30 less and don't have any regrets. On Sprint and the only disadvantage is not having the voicemail app, however you can still check voicemail, so that's hardly a deal breaker. Lower price, no carrier bloat, and flexibility to change carriers without giving up the Note 8. Win win!!
