You can use the gift card for accessories and if you have a down payment they will sometimes let you it for that as well.

Yes. My local Best Buy did this for me. They printed the $100 code sheet (its a printed sheet with a redemption barcode, not a gift card), then asked if I wanted to use it right away, which I did.
This may not be an option if purchasing online though.

have to wait for the card to become active the next day (in store purchases) or sent through the mail (online orders). I can tell you this from experience :)

Yes I used the $100 gift card to pay for taxes but you cannot use it towards the att next monthly payments.
