When I went in to upgrade my husband's phone, they had me pay for the phone and services, etc, up front, and gave me the gift card upon completion of the transaction. I was, however, able to use the gift card to pay for a phone case in a separate transaction

Nope. They issue your gift card after the transaction is complete and your payment has been made.

Not for the first phone but it can be used for additional phones, cases, accessories, etc.

You cannot. The gc isn't available until after the purchase.
