I just upgraded my son's phone through best buy. When doing this she asked if I would like put money down, I did and it lowered my monthly payments.

I purchased my S6 Edge at Best Buy with 24 payments. Assuming the process is the same, you did/do not get to pay extra on the phone to lower the payment. I called them to inquire about the trade-in amount and asked if that will credit to the phone cost and lower my payment at the time of trade-in. The sales person said the trade-in would not change the payment as they will give me a Best Buy gift card for the value of my old phone.
