I read if another Samsung device is near it will just create a "chain" to let you know where it was. In theroy 100 miles should work.

Samsung devices anonymously detect the Samsung smarttags and will send its approximate location to you. If you go to that area, your device will be able to more accurately pinpoint the smarttag's location.

You can absolutely track your keys or anything you have tagged from that distance. You would get the location in your SmartThings App and then be able to get closer to the item.
