“Since Samsung no longer updates software for my old galaxy tab 10.1, I must purchase something else. Will software be available for this in the future or are all basically throwaways.”

Yes, I too have an older Galaxy Tab that only received one update over many years, but this new one updated from android 9 to 10 within 24 hours of activation here in the USA. It also received the newest security patch update so Samsung seems to have got it right so far.
