I bought mine for a trip to Cozumel, then upgraded to a high end AT&T plan so I would have unlimited text, data, and phone calls. I didn't want to carry my cell for the same reason you stated. On LABOR Day, the day before I left, I was surprised to find this didnt have a SIM card slot so thephone on it wouldnt work without my phone as a hotspot. I now use this at home for game playing and other things besides talking.
