Hi there Mark, thank you for asking us your questions about the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+. The Galaxy Tab A9+ will be functional while on an airplane for offline activities, however, to use Wi-Fi for web browsing and email, you will need to purchase in-flight Wi-Fi. You will need an account (like a Google account) to use email and many other features, especially those that require syncing or app downloads.
