• open the messages app and it will prompt you to connect to your phone contacts. it works by using your phone's sim card connection. if you don't have a phone you can use an internet based app from the play store to send messages.

• You would have to have a SIM card like from a cell phone in it to send text messages. There is a place on the back of the SIM card / SD card tray that I believe can take one but I have not personally tried that.
