The Galaxy Active can take and respond back to text message however, it can not receive phone calls as the watch does not have a speaker. The distance is about the same as most other bluetooth devices which will depend on the materials between your phone and the watch such as metal, wood, and so on.

Yes , you can text from watch. Can not take calls, it has no speaker. You do get notifications that you have a incoming call.
