It is unlocked, if you don't buy it through your carrier. Using bluetooth keeps you from having to activate it. But you will be limited to distance in order to continue to get your notifications, but of course there's always wifi. I have 2 other bluetooth accessories, a Sony speaker and samsung earbuds. They all get connected through your phone and you can change settings about which accessory does what. For instance when working around the house, I'll have my speaker only play the audio output, and my headphones to get notifications and calls. Therefore my music doesn't have to interrupted if I don't want it to.

The LTE version can receive calls and messages without being connected to a phone. However, this watch model is the Bluetooth version.
