If you need to use calling and data features on the watch without the phone you need to get a plan from your carrier there's a monthly fee for this. Then you'll be able to make or get calls anywhere you get coverage from said plan /carrier. With that being said you can use those same features at no cost to you as you have your phone near proximity of the phone. Hope that helps
