If you need to use calling and data features on the watch without the phone you need to get a plan from your carrier there's a monthly fee for this. Then you'll be able to make or get calls anywhere you get coverage from said plan /carrier.
With that being said you can use those same features at no cost to you as you have your phone near proximity of the phone. Hope that helps

With the LTE version you can add it to your mobile plan for about 10.00 and it will be a stand alone communication device. No need for your phone to be with you

You do not need your phone at all to make calls from anywhere there is a signal.. with the lte version you can leave yor phone at home..

If you have lte and a supplemental line for the phone it can be independent .  Otherwise  watch needs to be close to android phone.

You can leave the phone at home.  With a Tmobile digits line, the LTE version of the watch will ring and receive texts on its own when away from your phone.
