• The HDMI port carries the video signal as well as the audio while the optical is exclusively audio.

• Hi Vaughn! If your devices support HDMI ARC or eARC, that’s the better choice for sound quality and ease of use. Optical is a good fallback if HDMI isn’t available or if you don’t need advanced audio formats. ~ Samsung Solutions
