Can be used either way. When I called them to activate mine, they gave me the option of prepaid or postpaid (plan).

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This phone is unlocked. Meaning you can download apps, change settings and use it as a regular cellphone without the phone and text features. To make phone calls and text you need a sim card. You can take the SIM card of your current phone and just insert it on this phone. Your plan will not change. If you have an iphone remember to turn off iMessenger before you switch. If you take it to verizon store they will do all of this but charge you $5-$6.
