I'm not sure if it will work well with iPhones below the 15. It ought to work well with the 15 and its video to hard drive settings. It works great with MacBooks. Make sure you format the hard drive OSX Journaled in Disk Utility. Thunderbolt 2 has a different plug. As far as speed is concerned they are the same speed at 20gbs (10 up and 10 down) Thunderbolt 3/4 is 40gbs (20 up 20 down). Hope this helps.
