Anyone using an optical cable through an AV receiver? If so, does it recognize the higher resolution digital surround sound formats, such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X?

Optical cables are not capable of playing TrueHD, Atmos or DTS-HD. This player has two HDMI output, the second one is audio only so you are able to connect the player directly to a TV and also connect a receiver without impacting the quality of the picture from older receivers.

I'm using an optical cable (from my 4K TV) to my Sonos Surround Sound System to get Dolby 5.1. This doesn't exactly answer your question about an AV receiver, but hopefully it's a data point.

If you were trying to have the Altmos sound you must run an HDMI cable to receive that now if you were just trying to do Dolby you can actually run over Wi-Fi Or Bluetooth Good luck
