Optical cables are not capable of playing TrueHD, Atmos or DTS-HD. This player has two HDMI output, the second one is audio only so you are able to connect the player directly to a TV and also connect a receiver without impacting the quality of the picture from older receivers.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I'm using an optical cable (from my 4K TV) to my Sonos Surround Sound System to get Dolby 5.1. This doesn't exactly answer your question about an AV receiver, but hopefully it's a data point.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you were trying to have the Altmos sound you must run an HDMI cable to receive that now if you were just trying to do Dolby you can actually run over Wi-Fi Or Bluetooth Good luck
