A memory card allows your phone, if so capable, to move photos, videos, usually documents, and also often SOME apps out of your phones "on-board" memory and on to the card. Works seamlessly while in your phone. Then you can remove it temporarily or permanently and it functions just like an old floppy disc. Pop it into your computer and look up your photo, transfer your videos etc.
