“will the head of the hdmi and power cables plugged into respective outlets on the wall behind the TV still allow for a close-to-the-wall fit? Also, can the Samsung "one connect" box fit behind the tv without pushing the tv further out from the wall?”

Cables, yes. Don't know about the Samsung box. I wanted to hide my cables so I located the opening, punched a hole in the wall and dropped them down through the wall and pulled them out at the bottom of the wall through a second opening. Of course I framed it all in with the appropriate plates to make it look nice. Only took 30 minutes.
