“You answered a question earlier that the "height" of the box was 15.87 inches. Did you mean the width so that it can be installed between 2 studs, 16" center to center? Any reason not to install this with the long dimension horizontal?”

It can be installed either way. The 15.87” include the perimeter frame, which you can leave off. The frame is about an inch wide.
