If PC right click the HD and select "remove hardware" if Mac just click on the eject button

Please try again later.Right Click on the icon for the drive and it will tell you when it,s safe to remove.....either at the bottom of the home screen or go to this PC, and under devices and drives.....right click on the proper drive and it will tell you when it's safe to remove.

Please try again later.When you plug an external drive into a USB slot, look down on the lower right in the active program area on you monitor and click on the up arrow you will see an icon that looks like a USB plug. If you will click on it it will correctly shut down your external drive and tell you it is safe to remove the plug.
