Is this Seagate external hard disc compatible with MacBook pro? I was unable to connect for back up?

Yes it is compatible. I cannot remember exactly what I did but part of it was to register my product and then I had to choose if I wanted it to be used for both mac and pc or just one or the other. I chose both. I have had no problems backing up my mac files. I was able to do it by simply dragging and dropping folder by folder. No problem.
In the course of figuring out how to do it, I did wind up opening something that seemed to indicate I could only copy each file separately and not in their folder. But after I registered the product and choose how I wanted to use the product, I had no problem dragging and dropping all from the "Finder" window. Do it all in one "Finder" window. Good luck.

If you're trying to do the Time Machine back-up, it needs to be specifically formatted for that. That basically means that you can't have anything else on it when you start formatting it. It should be fine after that, though.

Yes it is compatible, you have to format the hard drive to exfat if you want to use it on both windows and macs
