Can I use the Seagate on my Mac Air without an apple time machine and if I don't need the time machine can I do a complete backup without the drag ? Do I have to have an apple time machine with this Seagate to back up my mac book air? And if I can just use the Seagate without the time machine can I set it to do a complete back up periodically without having to drag and drop?

The drive comes with a Seagate Backup utility which is better than drag and drop. It comes with both versions Windows and Mac.

I just submitted a review on the Seagate 1TB USB drive, where I mentioned having to go to Disk Utility and Erase as FAT Extended.

From there, the drive is very fast and reliable, and allows files to be written to it from my daughter's Macbook running OSX 10.10

I installed the desk app in my iMac. From there you can drag files to the app main screen.

I am using it just to back up my photos, but you can use it either with Time Machine on your mac, or I believe you can install software to back up with the Seagate software. I have another Seagate that I use to back up my husband and daughter's laptops, but they are not macs. The seagate software works well for them. I would guess it would also work well for the mac, but I haven't actually tried it.

As long as the seagate is mac compatibility... Time machine is the apple built in software program use to backup the files on your mac to external seagate hard drive.

You want an external to back up your mac... Yes, you can set it up to back up certain times.
