• If you have verified that the files were correctly backed up to the device and accessible from the device, then yes you can delete them from your laptop to free up HDD space.

• Yes, that's exactly what I did, my startup disk was full, so i purchased the drive to use as a storage for my 4,000 photos. I am purchasing another external drive to have my photos stored in at least 2 places, just in case anything were to happen to one I would have a backup.
