Portable back ups are the best right now. you can get a 2 TB for less than $100. The ones with power adaptors are a thing of the past.

A USB powered drive such as this is ideal for additional storage, backup or projects. The larger desktop drives tend to have their own power source due to the fact that they have larger drives that spin at faster RPMs and consume more power. For a laptop a portable drive is perfect especially if the portable drive will be used on the go. Hope this helped.

A power adapter is used when the USB port can't pull enough power to operate the device. In this case, the USB port only needs to power the drive and can do it well, so no power adapter is needed.

No power adaptor is a lot better. It use the power from you computer but really don't need much. I had one with adaptor, and it's useless now.

With a power adaptor the drive tends to get hit and doesn't seem to last as long
