Does this add additional storage on a Xbox, like an external game drive. Or is it strictly a backup to what is already on the Xbox? null

This will add more storage to an Xbox one. You can also move internal storage games to this drive. I am not sure about xbox 360.

I used it for my Xbox one and it formatted automatically to be used as an external and works like the original that came with my system

I used it for more space on my playstation system. It should work with xbox also.

I use this for my Xbox One. Once you turn on the console, plug in external drive (preferably in the backside USB, so it is out of the way). I believe the Xbox One will automatically recognize it and ask you to format the external drive. Make sure you do not have anything on the drive, because the formatting the Xbox One does will remove it. Only takes about a minute then you are good to go. Then you can just leave the external drive hooked up to the console.

If you have any issues with the process there are quite a few tutorials online and specifically YouTube.
