I believe you are able to download the manufacturers app to allow you to control the bulb if you don’t have an Alexa dot or similar device to control it by voice.

Yes. If you want to use the smart home feature, this Bluetooth Mesh version in particular currently only works with Amazon Echos/Echo dots.

I downloaded the app. Seems you need other equipment to make this work other than to ask Alexa to turn it off and on. I just hope this doesn't turn into buying a ton of equipment to find out it still doesn't work??

This only works with Amazon Alexa. I made the mistake of buying it and downloading the app to find out it needs the device not just the app unfortunately.

If you don't have any kind of hub like an echo dot or show or something then you can use it with an app you put on your phone. I don't know if it has the app name on the box or not but you will find a little instruction sheet inside the box with the light bulb and it is on that.
