Umm, no, it kinda is the purpose. I mean if he is listening with volume way high you can hear what is going on, but its usually hard to make/understand words, just loud noises. I.e. a baby would sleep comfortably or people can chat without being disturbed, that is if you do not want to pick on him..

No. This model is a closed type headphone, so they shouldn't bother others around you. My wife sits on the other end of our sofa and says she can't hear them. These work great.
