“A friend just bought stereo and I helped hook it up. Everything seems to be hooked up correctly but there's no sound from the sub woofer. Any suggestions?”

Hello, the subwoofer is to be connected using the cords, red for positive and black for negative. Do not mistake the front speaker connection for the subwoofer, once this is done, then this should work.
