Yes, the part of the buds that contain the speakers has a magnet built in strong enough to help keep the buds touching when not worn (good for keeping it from getting tangled in a backpack for example) You should reach out to your son's Neurosurgical team so they can check with the device manufacturer on this; due to the nature of how headphones work most audio devices contain magnets, it is just a question of how far the magnet is from the skin and the exact position of the VP shunt. (this is not medical advice, just confirming that there does seem to be a moderately strong magnet in these earbuds and encouraging you to discuss with your son's provider team)

Please try again later.Yes, the sound transmission mechanism uses magnets that are quite strong, so much so that the earpieces actually stick to each other when not on your head. I didn't test the strength when in proximity to other conductive metal objects, but if this is a concerns I'd recommend the OpenRun model. The earpieces in that model do not seem to stick to each other anywhere near as strongly as the OpenMove's do.
