You do need the base for this to work. The lock itself does not connect directly to the WiFi and uses the base to enable the smart functionality. That said, the monitoring plan is not required. As far as I am aware, SimpliSafe doesn't require the monitoring plan to use any of their equipment.

I liked being able to install the system myself and the monitoring service subscription price is similar to other companies. So far everything has gone smoothly and I'm pretty satisfied. They say there is no commitment and the plan choice (there are two tiers), including cancellation, is supposed to be painless but I've not tried making any of those changes yet.
