Yes! each earbud has a full set of controls (pause/play; next/previous song; and up/down volume) and can be used one at a time by simply removing a single earbud from the case once the initial bluetooth connection has been set up.

Yes, you are able to use one at a time. However, I must warn you that the volume with increase in that one if you were using both prior. I was a bit taken by surprise when I switched to one and it was blasting.
