Yes, this system does require an A/V receiver that can support at least a 5.1 system (5 channels of full-range audio and 1 channel for the subwoofer.) The receiver should also have at least 100-watts of power or more per channel to power the system properly. The speakers are black; however, the speaker grilles are white and are paintable. The MAG5.1 Premium comes with (3) MAG6 LCR in-wall speakers and 2 MAG6 SUR surround speakers. Each front speaker has 2 woofers and 1 tweeter versus MAG5.1R which offers (3) MAG6R round in-ceiling speakers and 2 MAG6 SUR. Each front speaker has 1 woofer and 1 tweeter. The other big difference is the MAG 5.1 Premium comes with our MS10 Subwoofer a 10" powered subwoofer that includes our wireless transmitter and receiver kit. The MAG 5.1R comes with our MS8 Subwoofer a 8" powered subwoofer.
