“can I connect power cord from sub to back of Yamaha receiver, that way sub turns off when receiver is off? or is it better to have sub connected to wall outlet”

Better to run the sub directly from the wall outlet, it has its own automatic shut down and power up so a few minutes after no input is detected it goes into standby mode.
